Me and my silly fear of trying new food

by Josie on October 24, 2009 · 20 comments

You may recall that I recently posted that I wanted to try out some new foods. Well, I tried something new last night! Yep, we went to Perkins last night and I was in the mood to try something new…I looked at the salmon and I just wasn’t brave enough to order that quite yet, so I opted for the Grilled Tilapia w/ lemon pepper seasoning. I was so nervous too, my girls were making fun of me. “Mom, it’s just food” heh. Easy for them to say! I just kept having flashbacks from the last time I tried a seafood that I had never eaten before…

It was 1998, I was on my first date with my boyfriend (whom I later married), Darren. He took me to a seafood restaurant called “Schooner or Later”. It was a neat restaurant located in Goldsboro, NC that was literally shaped like a boat. When you walked in, you really thought you were on a boat. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s there anymore. I wish I had gotten a picture.

I wanted to try something ‘new’ so I ordered the Cajun Crawfish. I figured, “hey, I like shrimp, SURELY I would like crawfish!” UM. NO. I about fell out when our server brought my dish and there were creatures on my plate. Blech! I couldn’t get over how they looked (nevermind the process you have to go through to get the meat out of them) to enjoy them. I felt extremely bad for Darren. Here it was our first date and I about threw up right there in the middle of the restaurant. He urged me to order something different (how sweet) so I ordered shrimp and all was good. We boxed the vile creatures up and took them back to our boss who ate the hell out of them, so at least they didn’t go to waste. (For the record, I’m not a vegetarian by any means so I have no problem eating meat or seafood, but it just can’t LOOK like a creature when it comes to me. I have never eaten lobster for this very reason. Yes, I’m weird.)

So yeah, that’s all I kept thinking about last night after I ordered the Tilapia was “Dear God don’t let it look anything like the crawfish did”….Well, it didn’t…it actually looked pretty darned good! So, I pushed through my silly fear and just took a bite. Scrumptious! It was really good. I’m learning that I really like that lemon pepper seasoning too. (Note to self: start using that at home)

So yeah, I tried something new that was low calorie and tasted awesome…can’t get any better than that. Maybe next time I’ll be brave enough to try the salmon.

Or, maybe not. :-D

In other news, I went to the gym this morning while my family slept and got a great workout in. I’ve logged just over 8 miles for the week which means I’m close to making my 12 mile goal. We’re going to a haunted walk tonight, so hopefully between that and whatever I walk tomorrow I’ll reach my goal. OH!!! Speaking of goals, I posted this on my fitness log, but I don’t think I told you yet! I’ve gotten up to FOUR MINUTES on the Spawn of Satan! (er…Elliptical). FOUR WHOLE MINUTES without having to stop. I know that seems like nothing to a lot of you, but when I first got on that thing I could barely do a minute. My Hot 100 goal for this week was to hit 3 minutes, so I’ve reached that. Maybe I’ll up it next week to five. So, I’m doing good on the goals this week, although I still need to cook a meal. Maybe tonight.

Hope you’re all having a great Saturday!

UPDATE:

Thanks to Google Maps Street View, I found that the restaurant, Schooner or Later IS still there. Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like, mast and all. Blurry, but hopefully you get the idea.

I am always nervous to try new things too, but most of the time they aren’t bad. Also, great job on getting in four minutes of SOS (Spawn of Satan)!

I too am not one to go out of my way to try new things but occasionally I do but usually because I am out with others at work and they order something. A couple months ago a lady I worked with order fried pickles or something like it. All I know that it was a pickle. I ate one and hopefully will be my last.

That is so awesome that you ventured out and tried something new and exciting to eat. I love all sorts of fish and like you said it’s healthy and lox cal so how can you go wrong.
I myself tried something new as well. I made and enjoyed my first green smoothie. it took me a while to build up to doing it, but I did, and I loved it.
keep it up and by doing this your also opening up new doors to a better, healthier and fit life.

I’m terrible at trying new things. Just terrible. I’ve never had salmon because I don’t think I like fish. (Notice I said think!)

I’m glad you tried the new dish and that you liked it! Whenever we go to a seafood restaurant with friends I order pasta. I know that’s terrible!!

Have a great weekend!

Glad you made the leap and tried tilapia. I love it and I love salmon too. Fish is also something that cooks up nice and fast.

I actually love all seafood but was once served shrimp with their heads on and was totally grossed out. I got my BF to remove and hide them and then I was fine.

You should try a lobster tail…they are usually split out of the shell and served on top of it. Very easy to eat and one of my favourite foods.

Congrats on conquering the elliptical. When I lost my first 136 pounds I went to the gym a lot. I could barely use it as it knocked the wind out of my sails. A trainer there recommended I go slower to start with and work my way up. I got up to three minutes and before I knew it I was doing 20-30 minutes on it. At that time I also conquered the Stairmaster which was quite a feat.

Keep on pushing forward…you are meeting your goals and doing really well!!!

I love trying new foods! In fact, I now love curry! It took me years to try it again and now I think it is the most fabulous spice ever! Of course, I still won’t eat curried goat, which is what made me fear trying it again!

Great work on the elliptical!

Thank you everyone for the comments. I wish I could figure out how to get threaded comments to work on here. I think there’s something funky going on with the theme that won’t allow it. Anyway, I just wanted to say I appreciate the comments and it’s good to know that I am not the only one who is apprehensive to try new stuff. I think I might incorporate this into my Hot 100 goals – to try something new each week.

I have issues with new foods too sometimes but I’ve grown since I met my husband. Great for you getting in all that exercise!

1. I love that you refer to the elliptical as the Spawn of Satan…and I admire that you are determined to beat that thing! You so can, Satan is doomed to lose anyway! hehehe
2. I know what you mean about it looking like a creature when it comes to me on the plate. I can eat lobster tail or crab legs…or shrimp or fish, but the shrimp must be shelled and de-legged…no full on lobster…and for heavens sake cut the head and tail off the fish before you bring it out!
