Before I give details on today, I need to sorta describe how yesterday went other than the Turkey Trot I already wrote about.
Thanksgiving went almost as planned. For appetizers, my husband cooked fried wontons of which I had one. I also put out trays of fresh fruit and veggies instead of the cookies and chocolates I’ve done in years prior:

For dinner, my plan was to make mashed cauliflower for me to eat in lieu of mashed taters (my weakness), but they didn’t quite turn out right – at all. I don’t have a blender or food processor, I have just an old fashioned hand mixer and it didn’t really mash the cauliflower that well. And then after it sat for a few minutes the milk I had added was building around the edges, like it was extracting from what I did mash. So I had to toss them and go to plan B – STRAWBERRIES! (Still can’t believe I even had a Plan B!) But, yes, strawberries! My dinner consisted of turkey breast, sauteed green beans, (1) dinner roll, and a buttload of fresh strawberries. I am pleased to report that not-one-single-bite of mashed potatoes entered my mouth! Not even a “taste” while I was making them; I had asked my husband to taste instead. This was a huge victory for me – I am still in disbelief that I went an entire Thanksgiving without potatoes and survived. Whoda thunk it??
Now for dessert I had three choices – My cousin brought a homemade pumpkin pie, there was a cherry pie from the Publix deli, and an apple crisp that I made from scratch. I chose to have a half piece of cherry pie and a serving of the apple crisp. MMMmmm…let me tell you about the crisp. When I first posted my Thanksgiving Menu, Diane from Fit to the Finish offered to share her Apple Crisp recipe with me. Since it was something I had never made before, I made it last week as a “trial run” and, well, it didn’t turn out that good at all. I knew it had to be something *I* was doing wrong because I’m not that good in the kitchen…so I asked Diane and she suggested I put some water over the apples. So, as I was making it yesterday I was nervous it wouldn’t turn out again, but OMG it DID turn out WONDERFULLY! It was so yummy and everyone who had some loved it! So, thank you Diane for sharing the recipe! I took pictures of all the food, but those pictures are on my sister’s camera so I don’t have access to them right now.
Anyway, after dinner we all played Charades (which was hilarious – especially me acting out “Beyonce”
). Later in the evening my husband surprised me by wheeling out our Christmas tree and decorations from the garage. We usually start putting it all out the day after Thanksgiving, but he knows how much I love it and started bringing it all out for me last night.
Here are my girls and husband in the process of putting ornaments on the tree:

and, I caught one of our cats (Lu Lu) mid-yawn laying under the tree:

I love this time of year! I always get so sentimental and nostalgic as we pull the ornaments out…most of the ornaments we have “mean” something to us – whether it’s one my girls made or one that was given to us.
I hope you are having a great weekend (whether you celebrate the holiday or not). I’ve been so busy, so I apologize for not commenting on blogs the past day or so…if I don’t make it to your blog tonight, I will tomorrow. G’night!

Hi Josie. Congratulations on a very successful day! It sounds like a lovely day. And your daughters are beautiful! We named our new kitten Lulu yesterday. I had to smile when I saw your Cat named Lulu…:-) I hope you have a great weekend!
Josie – I just went back and read your last couple of posts! Congratulations on the Turkey Trot. You did really, really well! And you looked great! It’s such a great thing to do something that you never would have thought about doing. If someone had told you a few months ago, “Josie, on Thanksgiving morning you will get up super early and go do a 5K” you might have thought they were crazy, but look at you go!!
I’m so happy for you.
And the food sounds amazing. I’m glad you tried the crisp again – my family likes it a lot. And it’s even good reheated in the microwave if there is any left!
We are decorating today, tomorrow, and Monday. Yes, it’s a three day process. I’m going to post pictures of my hubby’s excess next week! Yikes!
Josie, what a great victory, not a bite of mashed potatoes, even when the mock potatoes didn’t turn out. This is, perhaps, the greatest victory of the day.
Thank you guys!
Kat – That’s awesome that you have a Lu Lu as well. Ours came to us as a stray and we love her so much.
Diane – Thanks so much…and you are right. I never, ever, ever would have thought that would be how I’d spend Thanksgiving!
Steve – It was the greatest victory for me…seeing all that mashed potato right in front of me and CHOOSING not to have any. Yeah, I’m still in disbelief over that! LOL
Thanks again for the comments everyone, I just love you guys!
Josie, what a wonderful day & congrats on your eating success!!! You made choices rather than eating everything which a lot of people do. You still got to enjoy with your desserts & for me, the key is choices. I know some people enjoy this day totally & that is fine BUT this shows you that you can do this. That you can make choices but still live your life & enjoy!
CONGRATS and love the pics!!!!
Congrats! I’m so glad you succeeded! And what a great time it sounded like you had–what a wondeful, loving family you have.
What a beautiful family you have, including Lulu.
We are going to set up our tree next weekend. Maybe I will surprise my youngest and get the house cleaned up and organized so we can get the tree up during the week instead. She is so excited about getting it up. She already has her sisters present wrapped and ready to go under! LOL
Thank you for coming by my blog today and commenting on the ‘giveaway’ post! I really appreciate it!!! Your Thanksgiving sounds delicious, by the way!
Your platters of healthy food look wonderful. Well done for staying so near to your plan whilst others eat the full works!
WOW. Josie, as someone who has a great weakness for potatoes, too, to the point of not even bringing them into the house at the moment, I am DEEPLY appreciative of what your victory means. You were such a GOOD girl! =) Really an inspiration to me, and I am so glad you had such an excellent time with your family on top of this victory, too!
What a good lookin’ family!
Sorry to hear your cauliflower didn’t work out – I was hoping you’d have success with it. I know a few people who swear by it! And to not have mashed potatoes at all? Go girl!!!
