Steve, over at Log My Loss, set a goal to walk 750 miles this year and he is right on track to achieving that goal. (!!!) Well, I’ve been so inspired by this that I’ve decided to follow his lead and set a similar goal for myself. I wanted it to be S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely) so here’s what I came up with:
Yep, I am hereby setting a goal to walk 500 miles between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010. That’s right around 10 miles a week. Hopefully having this goal will help keep me focused, especially as I start training to run a 5k.
Speaking of 5k’s, I wanted to give a little update on the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot I walked. I found the website last night that gave the official D-chip finish times. If you click on that website, be sure to change the event at the top to 5k “walk” instead of “run”…I was bib# 1566. Anyway, I had originally posted that I finished in 56:57 because that was the time as I crossed the finish line. For official times, however, they measure from the time your foot crosses the start line to the time you finish so I actually finished in 56:55…so I was 2 seconds off in my initial blog.
My official pace was 18:21. I also learned that I came in 219th place out of 282 participants.
Hope you’re all having a great weekend so far. I’ve been channeling my inner geek as I work on a certain Christmas present…it’s been challenging, but hopefully seeing the person’s reaction will make it all worth it.

Josie, I think that is a great goal. I am actually going to cut my walking back some next year. I am ready to start putting more strength training in, but the walking has been great.
Thanks for the shout out too!
I think I’ll be a Proclaimer with you, too! 500 miles in 2010. I’m so there!
And look at that! You finished better than almost 25% of the walkers. How cool is that?!
Wow, that sounds like a fantastic (and fun) goal! I just might have to think about a similar goal.
Wow Josie, that’s one LEAN & MEAN goal! Sounds like so much fun and a real challenge. (I love the Proclaimers, btw.)
At the moment I’m seriously pondering whether I can join you in this challenge – already did the math, need a pedometer, though. I haven’t walked in AAAAGES. You might just have a whole lot of folk walking right alongside you for 500 miles, whoohoo!
Great goal Josie!!!! I know you can do it! Yes, Steve is an inspiration!
And big congrats on your time!!! Isn’t it amazing how much we can do that we thought we could not…. I will have a post on this Tuesday. BUT, I love the SMART principles. I have posted about them too AND par of my post tomorrow is about that. It is a great article from ACE that you might enjoy.
Congrats on all!
Steve – you are very welcome. I never would have thought to set a yearly goal if not for you! I started the hot 100 right when I started my journey and I really think having those weekly goals helped me and is part of the reason I am still on track.
beej – I didn’t even think about it from the perspective as being faster than 25%! Thanks. I was content knowing I wasn’t last! And, I think you should be a proclaimer too!!!
Hilary – thanks for the comment. If you did make a similar goal, I would be here to root you on, even through the blahs!
Pippa – I would love for you to join us proclaimers! Well, you have almost a month to decide
Thanks for the comment!
Jody – I look forward to reading your post and thank you!
See what you started Steve??
Seems to me that you’ve set yourself a SMART goal for 2010!
Ooooh I really like this!! Sounds awesome
And congrats on the Turkey Trot-a 5k is a goal of mine next year.
Great goal Josie! I need to come up with a good one for 2010 that is both challenging and realistic, for me. We’ll see what I decide on by 12/31/09
That is a great goal, Josie! You will rock it! Hell, if you can do a c25k workout in flip-flops, you can do anything!!! I haven’t even started looking at 2010 goals…I need to get on that! Love the song, too!!! It would be a good treadmill song, I bet!!!
Great start to your New Year and a New You.
