Rewards!

by Josie on January 26, 2010 · 21 comments

Well, the good news is that I went back to the gym last night which was a first for me to go twice in one day! Another first was my total mileage for the day – 6.4 miles! This brings my total so far for the year to 25.

The bad news is that am plum pooped today! And a bit sore. My left hip, especially. I haven’t mentioned this before, but my left hip has been getting sore after I jog. At first I thought it was just a normal soreness to be expected after a workout or for someone my size trying to jog…but it’s ONLY my left hip. Wouldn’t they both be sore if it were just normal soreness? It has me a little concerned that there’s something else going on with my left hip, but there’s really nothing I can do about it right now, so I’ll just try to listen to my body the best I can.

Now for the fun stuff! I’ve been reading many of your blogs and one thing I see quite frequently is that you all reward yourself once you reach certain milestones. Certainly this would do wonders for your motivation having something else to look forward to, would it not? So, I’ve decided to join in and start rewarding myself! You may recall when I reached my first milestone of losing 25 lbs back in December. Well, I’ve decided to retroactively reward myself for that with this Camelbak water bottle:

ff058c43-202a-4e3f-97d8-3a64d0e350eb

It should be here tomorrow :-D

Here are my milestones I have listed in my right sidebar:

231: 25 Pounds lost (Reached 12/14/2009)
199: Will be my first time under 200 lbs in 14 yrs
160: Lowest weight I can remember being as an adult
156: 100 Pounds lost
135: Final Goal Weight

My next one will be when I hit what’s popularly known as “onederland”. I’m going to have to ponder what my reward will be for that and the other milestones. I will say this. I already know (have known for a while, actually) what I’d like to have once I reach my final goal weight. Stay tuned for details. :-)

American Idol tonight, I’ll sure be glad when auditions are over and we get to the good stuff! Have a great day everyone.

25.0 miles walked/jogged/ran since January 1st. (2010 Goal: 500)
6.4 miles biked since January 1st. (2010 Goal: 300)
1 5K finished since January 1st. (2010 Goal: 12)

Hi Josie! It sounds like your IT band may be acting up, which is a common issue for walkers/runners. You can buy a simple tool at Target or Walmart to help work out the tension in that area—it’s call a foam roller.

Here’s a video of how you would use the roller:

Also: I’m so proud of you for rewarding yourself!

Great job rewarding yourself like that! I need to think about doing this too.

I hope your hip feels better, but WOW, thats some awesome mileage you got goin’ on there.

I like the idea of rewarding oneself…but I think I’d be too impatient to actually do it :-P If I want something I’d want it right then and there!

It’s also nice to retroactively reward yourself! I’m not sure if/what I’ll do as a reward when I finally drop those last 5.4 pounds…maybe I’ll take some suggestions.

Hope your hip starts to feel better–I hate the war we play when out bodies start to break down just when we are fighing our fat!

Great idea about listening to your body. I started lifting weights again a few weeks ago and my elbow and wrist on opposite arms started bothering me. I am not going to lift again until I find out what is wrong.

Rewarding yourself is an excellent idea. Nice water bottle!!!

Looking forward to hearing about your onederland reward.

You deserve to reward yourself! I have issues with my right hip with overuse. Stretching helps and I also have a foam roller like the one that Hilary mentions. It is really helpful and feels better when I stretch with the roller. You are doing great, keep up the good work!

Rewards can be great motivators! I think I need to figure out a benchmark so I can reward myself with a nice pedometer. I really want one, but really feel like I have to have a reason to spend money right now.

Hi Josie! Congrats on all the great work! I do think that hip thing is something you should be concerned about. It can get worse & take that from a person that knows! :-)

You got some good advice on foam rollers & I also did a post on that. Also, STRETCHING. I can not tell you how important that is to me & all the jogging I do. Another thing, I think you said you got new shoes, right? It is really important to have the right shoes & ones for that activity.. so if you are jogging, get running shoes, not cross trainers or walking shoes. Also, are they fitted correctly. I know when my shoes were not right OR they were to worn, my stride/gait changes & there go my hip issues. I have not had probs in a while BUT do take care of that as it can get worse. And again., being to tight & not doing the stretching/flexibility can lead to this too.

Hang in there!

Love the reward program.. non food related! :-)

A reward system is a great idea to help keep you motivated, and to help keep things fun. I’ll have to try that out myself… :)

I have right hip issues when I don’t stretch my hamstrings enough. It pulls on the hip which in turn, if not corrected (by religiously stretching), causes the pelvis to twist. That is usually what happens with me ( I am not a religious stretcher, No patience) and I end up having to see the chiropractor to put my hip back in correct place. I need to make and appointment as I speak. Maybe I should get some stretching going on!! :)

Great idea to reward yourself! I do that too, usually with a small gift related to my health but as I’ve lost 10 kg I decided I earned a bigger gift and bought myself a new Ipod since my old one doesn’t work properly anymore.
